Celebrating World Environment Day 2019 – Air Pollution

Slogan for this year’s World Environment Day is ‘Raise your Voice, not the Sea Level.’ But, Nepal is marking the day under the theme of “Save Himalayas, Preserve Environment”.

5 June, Kathmandu: Different programs are being organized across the country today to mark the World Environment Day.

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in association with different donor agencies is organizing different programs. The programs include interaction, seminar, speech, rallies and others.

Likewise, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala is attending a special program to be organized at Academy Hall today before leaving for China.

World Environment Day is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all year round and climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere.

The World Environment Day celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become one of the main vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.

Through World Environment Day, the United Nations Environment Program is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.

The celebration of the World Environment Day for the country like Nepal could be a milestone  to create awareness among the general public as in the recent year we are the receiving end due to effects of the climate change resulting in delayed monsoon, snow melting in the Himalayas, glacial outburst and many others.

Likewise, Nepal bio-diversity is at risk due to climate change.


World Environment Day (WED) is a UN Environment-led global event, observed annually on 5 June. It is celebrated by thousands of communities worldwide and is an opportunity for people to do something positive for the environment. Over the years, it has grown into a global platform for public outreach that is celebrated by stakeholders in more than 100 countries.

The theme for WED 2019 is air pollution – creating awareness about the different types of pollution and how it affects our health and environment. WED 2019 aims to emphasize the need for renewable energy and green technologies to improve air quality in cities and regions across the world.

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will celebrate WED on 4 June 2019. It aims to:

Raise awareness about environmental issues among the public

Encourage people from different communities to actively develop environmental safety measures

Encourage people to join the campaign and work toward a safer, cleaner, and more prosperous future
