Internet Protocol

What is IP?

è It stands for Internet Protocol. It is a logical address used to provide unique identification to a host in any network. It is a network layer address which is given to every device connected in a network. IP address is divided into two parts. They are:
         1)   IPv4
         2)   IPv6

What is IPv4 ?

è It is a 32 bits logical address used to provide unique identification to a host in any network. 32 bits are divided into 4 equal’s parts. Each part contains 8 bits that’s why these parts are called octate. Each octate part in 32 bits (IPv4) is separated by dot (.)

What is IPv6 ?

è It is a 128 bits logical address used to provide unique identification to a host in any network. 128 bits are divided into 8 equal’s parts. Each part contains 8 bits that’s why these parts are called octate. Each octate part in 128 bits (Ipv6) is separated by colon (:)

Difference between IPv4 and IPv6

IPv4
S.N.
IPv6
It is 32 bits logical address.
(1)
It is 128 bits logical address.
32 bits are divided into 4 equal parts.
(2)
128 bits are divided into 8 equal parts.
It is separated by dot (.).
(3)
It is separated by colon (:).
It was deployed in 1981 AD
(4)
It was deployed in 1999 AD
In IPv4 we can input 232= (4294967296) addresses.
(5)
In IPv6 we can input 2128 =
(340282366920938463463374607431768211456) addresses.
Eg.: 10.10.10.10
(6)
Eg.: 1234:abcd:5678:ef:9:0:a:1
